Reports, maps, scenario's

Since the start of NSE, we have published multiple reports, white papers, scenario's, maps and roadmaps highlighting the main outcomes and key learning of our research.

Our recent publications focus on three virtual offshore energy clusters, where we explore innovative concepts for the production, conversion, transport, and storage of offshore energy. Through unique visualisations and energy system modelling, we demonstrate the key role of the North Sea in achieving an independent and affordable energy system in an integrated way.

The scenarios and maps underline the importance of offshore wind, hydrogen production, CO₂ storage, and the phase-out of natural gas for the future energy system of the Netherlands and Europe. The roadmaps outline the exploratory national and European pathways to get there, while additional reports and white papers provide insights from various integrated perspectives.

Roadmap: Empowering and decarbonizing The Netherlands

Indicative scenarios for the Dutch part of the North Sea examin the energy system that could materialize between now and 2050. The pathways - seen through the lens of electricity, hydrogen, natural gas, and CO2 - provide insights into the potential magnitude of the challenges in the offshore energy transitions.

Roadmap: Empowering and decarbonizing Europe

Key trends foreseen for electricity, hydrogen, CO2 and natural gas in the North Sea region in the coming decades form the starting point. The approach explores and sketches an ambitious future scenario for the North Sea region, for which we identify what infrastructure for the North Sea would be required, the bottlenecks, and resolving actions for making this ambitious scenario reality.

Integrated Grid Compass

Whitepaper: Towards a synergetic multi-use in the North Sea

Spatial constraints in the North Sea lead to competition among different activities for the same space. We investigated how various offshore human activities and marine protected areas can coexist within the same space. We analyzed: (1) wind farms and obstacle-free zones around oil and gas platforms, (2) wind farms and shipping lanes, (3) marine protected areas and fishing, (4) marine protected areas and offshore grids.

Roadmaps

The North Sea Energy roadmap presents integrated transition pathways for offshore wind, marine energy, hydrogen, CCS, and natural gas towards 2050. Based on a participatory process with stakeholders and aligned with national and European ambitions, it identifies the key actions for Europe and the Netherlands needed to accelerate offshore energy system integration and provide clarity for policymakers, developers, and society.
